CIRCLE DESCRIPTION

This circle uses storytelling exercises as tools to help you improve creative, professional, and interpersonal skills. You’ll learn how to use story as a tool for craft, and also self-understanding, problem-solving, and personal empowerment.

In each session, you’ll be given a guided writing exercise that helps you practice building fictional characters, worlds, and situations, and ends with personal reflections you can use to help you build your career.

Creatively, these writing exercises will help you improve your ability to craft:

  • Authentic fictional story concepts
  • Beilevable character motivations
  • Thematically-driving character designs, worldbuilding, and art direction

From there, we’ll look at the stories you’ve created and mine them for insights to tackle a variety of soft skills you are struggling with in your work or life.

For example, if you’re struggling with staying calm under pressure, we’ll workshop your challenge through the eyes of your protagonist in their fictional world by putting them into a challenging situation and exploring the lesson they need to learn so they can access a state of calm. Because your protagonist is based on you, we’ll translate your ideas back into the real world, helping you leverage your existing resources in a new way.

Each member of this circle will leave with improved storytelling skills, springboards and ideas for indie projects, and new insights into how to tackle interpersonal and professional challenges in their own lives.

Circle Leader

Jessie BUI

Jessie Kate Bui is the Founder of Hedge Studio and a specialist in character psychology, narrative development, and costume design.

Her work integrates personality psychology with visual storytelling to help artists create authentic character arcs and grounded, emotionally resonant costume choices. When she discovered a significant gap in costume design education, Jessie Kate gathered and led a team of specialists to create the book “Talking Threads: Costume Design for Entertainment Art”. The book has since become a textbook for entertainment artists at colleges like Art Center, UCLA, and Carnegie Mellon.

Her background spans production coordination for TV animation, creative direction for indie and startup projects, freelance design, educational program design, and mentorship for independent creators. Through Hedge Studio, she continues developing original IP and holistic approaches that support creatives in strengthening their self-awareness through storytelling, building trust in their artistic voice, nurturing confidence in their research and design practices, and decreasing burnout.

She shares her approaches publicly through the ongoing development of her studio’s core project, Parallax, which documents the full process of building a transmedia story world from the inside out.
