CIRCLE DESCRIPTION

This mentorship is about the process, tools, workflows, and technology of virtual production applied to animation. Mentees will learn about some of the surprising ways that animation production is changing.

Within the circle we will cover the following topics:

  • Differences of Live Action, Animation, and Virtual Production
  • How Technology Helps Workflows Scale with Team Size
  • Trading Technology for Labor
  • “The Camera As a Gateway to Virtual” or “Physics for Poets”
  • The Tortured Relationship of Mocap and Animation
  • Simulating Cameras and Lenses (Virtual and Real Cameras)
  • Spatial Collaboration in Virtual Reality
  • Unreal Game Engine: Different and Powerful Approach to Working
  • Generative Imaging with AI Models (Comfy UI and friends)
  • Breaking Rules 1: Non-realistic Cameras and Lighting
  • Breaking Rules 2: Mixed Media (combining 2D and 3D techniques)

    • Statement of interest and description of relevance to career
    • How you are currently using CG animation tools, e.g., Maya or Blender, and your interest in virtual production tools, like Unreal Engine, mocap, VR, and generative AI.

Circle Leader

Rhea Fischer & Eve Roth

Rhea Fischer: 
Rhea Fischer has 20 years of experience with virtual production technologies in feature film production and animation, including mocap and real-time CG. She’s currently at the Russo Brothers brothers’ AGBO LLC, where she leads a pipeline software team. She has previously contributed to feature films such as Polar Express, Monster House, Beowulf, A Christmas Carol, Avatar 2, Ultraman Rising, and The Other Large Thing animated short for Netflix Love, Death and Robots anthology.

Eve Roth:
Eve Roth is a Virtual Production Supervisor and artist with over five years of experience in film and animation, specializing in Unreal Engine and advanced virtual production workflows. She is currently the Virtual Production Supervisor and Lead Virtual Art Department Artist at 4Wall Entertainment, where she leads teams in preproduction and on set, contributing to projects including Westworld, Endurance, Caught Stealing, Long Bright River, and Escape from Hat. Her expertise spans visual development, virtual set design, and in-camera VFX, driven by a passion for innovation and storytelling. Eve holds a BFA in Digital Arts from Pratt Institute, has spoken at VIEW Conference and with Women in Animation, and continues to explore creative practice through sketching and ceramics in Brooklyn.  

Rhea and Eve have known each other for more than five years while keeping up with the fast-changing tools of the trade.
