CIRCLE DESCRIPTION
Are you dreaming of a career in animation as a Storyboard Artist—but feeling unsure how to move forward in a slow or shifting industry? Whether you’re just finishing school, transitioning from another path, or stuck in the “almost-there” phase, this circle is here to provide structure, encouragement, and real-world tools while you wait for the right opportunity to land.
In this circle, you’ll get the guidance you need to stay creatively active, professionally visible, and mentally grounded while building your storyboard career. By the end of the term, you will:
- Understand the storyboarding role within the animation pipeline, including how board artists work with directors, writers, and editors to shape the storytelling process; and what jobs you can expect to have along the way.
- Develop a piece for your portfolio in a supportive environment, with feedback designed to help your work shine and feel industry-ready.
- Build and maintain your technical skills, including shot composition, pacing, and storytelling fundamentals.
- Establish healthy working habits and professional expectations We’ll talk about how to stay inspired and stay visible.
- Structure a portfolio with recruiters in mind, what helps you stand out, and why continuing to make (and share!) work can keep you on their radar.
- Learn essential professional communication skills to help you manage freelance gigs, interviews, and your own creative practice.

- Portfolio of work: The work doesn’t need to be storyboards, but needs to demonstrate good drawing fundamentals
- Personal Statement: What goals do you have for this circle? Would you like to build a portfolio for applying to jobs? Make professional connections? Start working on a short film? One to two sentences detailing your goals is fine.

Rebecca McVeigh
Rebecca McVeigh started at Pixar as a story intern in 2017 before being hired on full-time as a story artist in 2021. Most recently she has worked on “Inside Out 2” and “Toy Story 5.”
Prior to Pixar, Rebecca worked at Blue Sky Studios as a story artist on the film “Nimona” and at various studios on a variety of projects from TV shows to web content to short films.
