CIRCLE DESCRIPTION
You’ve written scripts. You’ve taken the classes. You’ve done the fellowships (or at least gotten really close). Maybe you’ve even worked in production, development, or post— but one thing seems to be standing in your way: an undeniable writing sample to advance your career.
We all know that writing is really rewriting, but often we can be blind to the easy formatting errors, messy “story math” and other qualities that can take a script from “good” to “great”.
Whether you’ve been climbing the ladder from the assistant track, winning contests, or self-generating samples like a pro, this is the place to sharpen your work, your instincts, and your shot at getting hired.
By the end of the term, you’ll:
- Understand the top mistakes that hold scripts back—and how to fix them in your own pages.
- Workshop selected pages with your mentor to get real, actionable feedbackÂ
- Study best practices for screenwriting structure, pacing, dialogue, and character work, so your voice stands out for the right reasons.
- Hear from guest speakers who’ve staffed, showrun, or hired writers—and who will tell you what really tips the scales.
- Build your toolkit for pitching yourself, whether for a freelance script, a fellowship, or a staff job.
- Walk away with a concrete revision plan for at least one sample script—plus sharper instincts for your next one.

Julia Prescott
JULIA PRESCOTT is a writer/director from North Hollywood whose work has criss-crossed between animation and live-action comedy for over a decade. She’s the creator of TOWNIES, an “OC in the Old West” comedy series starring Natalie Palamides and Mr. Show’s John Ennis. Her episode of The Simpsons “Treehouse of Horror XXXI” was named by Variety as one of the “Top 30 Episodes” of the show’s historic run. In 2024, she was nominated for an Annie Award for “Best Writing” on the Nick/Paramount show Rock, Paper, Scissors (to which she lost to Blue Eyed Samurai).
In 2024, she became a Fellow in the inaugural cohort of Dan Lin’s Rideback RISE, an incubator for mid-career creatives working on commercially-minded TV and film projects. Within RISE, she completed 2 original feature scripts and wrote and directed a short film proof of concept that’s currently making the festival rounds.
She occasionally can be found in front of the camera — most recently, she starred in Universal Studio Hollywood’s “This is Universal” marketing campaign where she played a childless theme park obsessive also named Julia.
